NOTABLE INMATES

  • captain bennett

William Bennet was a Jailor in 1911 to 1937. One of the longest tenures of any jailor. He lived in the Jailers Quarter with his wife and eight children.

Captain Patrick Hanley served as a Jailor from 1909 to 1911. Hanley was a detective before being appointed Jailor.

  • sergent william h. carney

Sargent William H. Carney was the first African American awarded a Medal of Honor. He was a member of the Massachusetts 54th regiment and fought in the battle of Fort Wagner. The majority of the unit was held captive after the siege.

John Milligan served as Jailor from 1855 to 1868. His wife and many kids lived in the Jailors Quarters; three of which were conceived in the jail.

Captain James Kelly served as Jailor from 1882 to 1898. His wife Annie is the only one listed as living with him at the Jail.

Lewis and Charleston Douglass are the sons of Fredric Lewis a well know African American abolitionist. They both served in the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. The majority of the unit was held captive after the siege.

Sergeant Robert John Simmons was a Bermudian who was a member of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. He fought in the battle of Fort Wagner and was captured. He passed from his wounds at the Jail.

Governor William Moultrie was a revolutionary war general and eventually Governor of South Carolina. He was held here in this jail for a short period in debtor prison/cell for his unpaid bills associated with his failed published memoirs/book.

Captain Luis F. Emilio was a member of the 54th. He fought in the battle of Fort Wagner and emerged as acting commander. The majority of the unit was held captive after the siege.

  • henry a. monoroe

Henry A Monroe was a member of the 54th. Monroe was a drummer boy only 13 at the time he enlisted (although he lied and said he was 18). The majority of the unit was held captive after the siege.
